Applesauce is such a dynamic simple creation. It is something that we are introduced to from a young age. My daughter enjoyed this as a snack or meal when I started to introduce her to solids.
As an adult I’ve incorporated applesauce into a variety of treats. It has served as a sweetener in muffins and cakes when my cupboard bore no honey or maple syrup.
Here is a simple version of an everyday sauce that doesn’t have the guilt of added sugar or the unnecessary addition of refined sugars.
Don’t forget to drop a comment below sharing with us how you’ve incorporated this sauce into your desserts and share the recipe with your friends and family. We’d love to see pics of any of our recipes that you’ve taken the time to make.
Ingredients
2 medium pink lady apples peeled, cored and chopped (or any sweet variety)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp lemon juice
**optionally** 1 tbsp raw honey
Method
Add apples and cinnamon to saucepan
Cook covered on medium heat
Once it begins to bubble, reduce heat and cook until apples begin to caramelise (15-20 minutes)
Stir occasionally
Once cooked, add lemon juice (and if using honey) and stir.
Use a potato masher for a chunkier applesauce or a blender for a smooth sauce
Tips
If you enjoy a more tart applesauce, use a different variety of apples like Granny Smith
This applesauce doesn’t really need additional sweetening so be sure to taste it before you add any honey.
